NPCBots and Alt Bots

Hire persistent AI companions, equip them, command them, and project your own offline characters into the world.

Status: LIVE — hiring, alt bots, bot gear, bot commands, battleground bots, and rated-arena opponent bots are enabled. NPCBot gear bank and .npcbot spawn are Disabled. Some Oaths prohibit bots.

At a glance

  • Hire cost: 1,000,000 copper is the level-80 base — 100 gold for a normal bot. Lower levels cost much less.
  • Rent: 0. Bots do not charge upkeep.
  • Bot cap by level: 4 from levels 1–39, 39 from level 40 onward.
  • Account cap: none (MaxBotsPerAccount=0).
  • Hero cap: 1 hero NPCBot per account.
  • Alt bots: up to 4 active projections from your own account.
  • Starter gear: each normal bot gets one permanent level-appropriate uncommon set on its first successful hire.
  • Bot gear bank: Disabled. Use .botdoll equip from your bags.
  • .npcbot spawn: Disabled for players; the command is GM-gated anyway.
  • Bots are allowed in dungeons, raids, battlegrounds, arenas, and dungeon finder groups. They are not automatic RDF fill.
  • Wandering bots: 3,000 ambient bots across Eastern Kingdoms, Kalimdor, Outland, and Northrend. They do not gain XP.
  • Oath restrictions: Unfallen, Adversity, and Underdog prohibit NPCBots at every level; Dungeoneer prohibits them from level 17.
  • Alt-bot restriction: a character with any active Oath cannot be projected as an alt bot.

How to hire and use bots

  1. Hire from the catalog. Type .botdoll hirelist to see classes, then .botdoll hirelist <classID> to list bots of that class.
  2. Inspect before buying. .botdoll hireinfo <botEntry> shows level, spec, cost, and gear information.
  3. Buy the bot. .botdoll hire <botEntry> completes the hire. You must have the copper and a free bot slot.
  4. Or hire directly. Target an uncontrolled bot, then use .npcbot add. Right-clicking the bot and choosing its service option works the same way.
  5. Open the paperdoll. Use the NPCBotPaperdoll addon, or .botdoll roster, to manage equipment and the roster.
  6. Equip the bot. .botdoll equip <botEntry> <slot> <bag> <slot> moves an item from your bags onto the bot. The addon provides slot buttons.
  7. Command the bot. .npcbot command follow is the default. Use standstill, stopfully, nocast, and nolongcast for control.
  8. Set distances. .npcbot distance 15 changes follow distance; .npcbot distance attack short or long changes attack range.
  9. Pull and cast on demand. .npcbot order pull <botName> and .npcbot order cast <botName> <spell_name> are the manual controls.
  10. Dismiss. .npcbot remove dismisses the selected owned bot. .altbot dismiss <name> removes an alt projection.

Hiring costs

The base cost is 1,000,000 copper at level 80 for a normal class. The server scales it by your level:

Your levelNormal bot hire cost
1–95 silver
10–191 gold
20–295 gold
30–3920 gold
40–4950 gold
50–5962.5 gold
60–6975 gold
70–7987.5 gold
80100 gold

Special and hero classes cost more: Blademaster, Archmage, SpellBreaker, and Necromancer are 2×; Obsidian Destroyer, Dreadlord, Dark Ranger, Sea Witch, and Crypt Lord are 5×. The catalog shows the exact price for your level.

Rent is zero. You are not charged per hour. Hire is one-time; the starter gear grant is also one-time per bot.

The 39 cap is also the raid-size cap. You do not get 39 bots in addition to a full raid; the total group/raid size still applies.

Alt bots

Alt bots are projections of your own offline characters from the same account.

  • .altbot list shows every character on the account and whether it is available, online, the current character, or dismissing.
  • .altbot add <name> or .altbot summon <name> brings an offline character in as a bot.
  • .altbot dismiss <name> removes the projection.
  • .altbot refresh <name> reloads the projection from the character’s latest saved data.
  • .altbot role <name> <tank|heal|dps|auto> sets the projection’s main role.
  • Persistent changes: XP and equipment changes on the projection are saved to the real character.
  • No rename: alt bots cannot be renamed.
  • No freeing: use .altbot dismiss; .npcbot free refuses alt bots.
  • Up to 4 active. A character that is online or currently played cannot be projected.
  • Higher-level alts are allowed because RejectAboveOwnerLevel=0.
  • Any active Oath blocks the character as an alt bot, even if that Oath otherwise allows normal NPCBots.

NPC references

There is no separate fixed botgiver NPC. An uncontrolled NPCBot is its own hire interface.

Wandering bots3,000 across maps 0, 1, 530, 571Ambient bot population; hireable
Alt-bot sourceyour own accountOffline characters, not NPC entries
NPCBot PaperdolladdonGear and roster interface

The hire catalog uses bots already present on your map. If a class is missing from .botdoll hirelist, move to another zone or check back; the world does not create a bot on demand for you.

Tips

  • Hire early, not at 80. A level-10 bot costs 1 gold; the same normal class costs 100 gold at 80. The bot’s level is set by the catalog, not by your level.
  • Use the starter gear. The first hire grants a permanent uncommon set. It is not repeated if you dismiss and rehire.
  • Do not buy the NPCBot gear bank. It is disabled. Use .botdoll equip from your bags.
  • The player .gearbank is different. It stores your own gear; it does not feed bots.
  • One hero per account. Choose the hero class you actually want to keep.
  • Alt bots are free in the sense that they are your own characters, but the 4-active cap and Oath restrictions still apply.
  • Do not level an alt solely to project it. Higher-level alts are allowed, but a character with an active Oath cannot be projected.
  • Oaths matter. Unfallen, Adversity, and Underdog prohibit NPCBots at all levels; Dungeoneer releases hires at 17.
  • Dismiss fully before activating a bot-blocking Oath. Unbinding or hiding is not enough; ownership must be released.
  • Bots count toward group XP reduction. A full bot party will slow your character’s XP.
  • Money sharing is off. Bots do not take a cut of coin loot.
  • Honor reduction is on in groups. Bot-assisted battleground honor is reduced.
  • Use standstill for pulls. Bots otherwise chase and can break crowd control.
  • Use nocast or nolongcast on fights where a bot’s cast would wipe the group.
  • Bot gear is permanent. Equip upgrades deliberately; the paperdoll addon is the safest way to compare.
  • Wandering bots do not level. Their XP gain is zero.
  • NPCBots are not automatic RDF fill. The server does not create bots to fill empty slots; form the group manually.
  • Bots can enter battlegrounds and arenas. Rated arenas can generate opponent bots; see 21 — PvP.

Wandering bots are 3,000 across maps 0,1,530,571 with XPGain=0, and BG wandering bots are enabled. Bot paperdoll commands belong to NPCBotPaperdollBridge.cpp; the gear bank command belongs to mod_gearbank.cpp and is a separate player system. NpcBot.GearBank.Capacity=40 is inert because the feature is disabled. Hero classes are capped at one per account; special/hero hire multipliers are 2× (Blademaster, Archmage, SpellBreaker, Necromancer) and 5× (Obsidian Destroyer, Dreadlord, Dark Ranger, Sea Witch, Crypt Lord). Oath gating is enforced in LevelingChallengeRules::BlocksNPCBots: Unfallen, Adversity, and Underdog always; Dungeoneer at level 17 and above. Any active Oath also blocks that character as an alt-bot target. Do not enable SpawnCommand or raise MaxBots above 39 without checking raid and arena behavior; do not re-enable the NPCBot gear bank without a migration plan for mod_gearbank player items.
