Glyphs

Glyphs are permanent spell modifications made by Inscription. From the Ashes makes the full base glyph catalog trainable, adds 28 Outland reputation glyphs, and unlocks two extra glyph slots at level 70.

Status: LIVE — base glyphs, Outland glyphs, extra slots, and the custom glyph repairs are live.

At a glance

  • 348 base glyphs are trainable from Inscription trainers at skill 75–300.
  • 204 formerly discovery-only glyphs are now directly trainable. You no longer need research or recipe scrolls for them.
  • 19 Inscription trainers across Alliance and Horde sell the base recipes.
  • 28 Outland glyphs are added: 19 major and 9 minor.
  • Outland recipes come from faction quartermasters at Revered (major) and Honored (minor).
  • Extra slots: at level 70, you gain one extra major and one extra minor slot. They are server-backed and shown by ExtraGlyphSlots.
  • Glyph levels: first major/minor at 10, second minor at 20, second major at 30, third major at 40, third minor at 60.
  • No glyph trainer sells Outland recipes. Those are reputation vendor purchases.
  • Glyphs are consumed when applied. Replacing a glyph does not return the old one.
  • No player command installs a glyph. Use the glyph item on the slot.

How to use

  1. Learn Inscription from an Inscription trainer.
  2. Train glyph recipes as your skill rises from 75 to 300. The trainer list includes the 204 formerly discovery-only glyphs.
  3. Craft the glyph you want. The recipe uses the normal Inscription materials for its skill.
  4. Open your Glyphs tab and apply the glyph to a matching major or minor slot.
  5. Check your slot unlocks: 10, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 60.
  6. At 70, open /xglyph show (or /extraglyphs show) to see the extra major and minor slots.
  7. Apply a glyph to an extra slot exactly as you would to a native slot. The server saves extra glyphs per active spec.
  8. For Outland glyphs, raise the faction’s reputation, buy the recipe at Honored or Revered, then craft it with the listed inks.
  9. If a glyph is missing from the trainer, check your Inscription skill and the trainer’s faction. Some recipes require a minimum skill, not just a level.
  10. Use /xglyph refresh after a spec change or login if the extra-slot display looks stale.

Native WotLK has six glyph slots: three major and three minor. The level-70 system adds one of each, for four major and four minor on a level-80 character with all native slots unlocked.

Base glyphs

The base catalog covers 348 distinct usable glyphs. The important changes are:

  • 155 existing recipes kept their original materials, skill thresholds, and trainer rows.
  • 193 expansion-dependent recipes were converted to vanilla materials and requirements at or below 300.
  • 204 discovery-only glyphs were made directly trainable. Discoveries can still teach the same spell, but you do not need them.
  • The progression spans Inscription 75–300. The normal ink and scroll progression before 75 still exists.
  • Nine skill-300 bridge recipes use vanilla materials instead of Ethereal Ink. These include Flash of Light, Earthliving Weapon, Death’s Embrace, Plague Strike, Corpse Explosion, Pestilence, Raise Dead, Envenom, and Eternal Water.
  • No glyph effects were changed by the trainer pass. Effects are handled separately below.

Inscription trainers are the normal city trainers. There are 19 NPCs on the three Inscription trainer lists. Ask a city guard for the Inscription trainer if you cannot find one.

Outland glyphs

The Outland catalog adds 28 recipes across the Burning Crusade factions. Major recipes require Inscription 325 and Revered. Minor recipes require Inscription 300 and Honored.

Use the standard Virtuoso Inking Set. The existing TBC milling and ink recipes supply the materials. The recipes are not learned automatically and are not on the glyph trainers; buy them from the faction quartermaster.

Custom glyph fixes

These existing glyphs were repaired or reworked. They are not new glyphs.

GlyphWhat it does now
Glyph of FireballNo longer deletes Fireball’s periodic aura. Periodic damage is increased by 10%, and the 0.15-second cast-time reduction remains.
Glyph of Fire BlastThe 50% damage bonus applies only when the target has a stun or knockout mechanic. The obsolete critical-chance adjustment is removed; Fire Blast’s guaranteed critical strike remains.
Glyph of EnvenomEnvenom no longer consumes your Deadly Poison. Combo points are still spent normally. Master Poisoner still preserves poison independently.
Glyph of Death StrikeThe damage bonus now scales correctly at 1% per runic power, up to 25%. The old bug reached the cap at 2.5 displayed RP.
Glyph of BattleIncreases Battle Shout radius by 50% instead of adding two minutes. Base 30 yards becomes 45.
Glyph of CommandIncreases Commanding Shout radius by 50% instead of adding two minutes. Base 30 yards becomes 45.
Aimed Shot / Multi-Shot / Elemental Mastery glyphsShared-charge tooltips now show the correct independent recovery. Aimed Shot is 10 seconds, 8 with its glyph; Multi-Shot is 10 seconds, 9 with its glyph; Elemental Mastery is 180 seconds, 150 with its glyph; Nature’s Swiftness stays 120.

With Booming Voice rank 2 and the matching shout glyph, Battle or Commanding Shout reaches 60 yards. The glyph adds no duration; the 30-minute base shout duration remains.

There is no dedicated glyph NPC. Base glyphs come from Inscription trainers; Outland glyphs come from faction quartermasters. Extra slots are automatic at 70 and need no NPC.

Tips

  • Train the base catalog while leveling Inscription. The 204 formerly discovery-only glyphs are now on the trainer and no longer require research.
  • Do not vendor duplicate recipes. Check whether you already know the glyph before buying a second copy.
  • Major and minor slots unlock at different levels. Do not assume every slot is available at 10.
  • At 70, turn on the extra-slot display. /xglyph show is easy to forget after the level-up.
  • Extra glyphs are saved per spec. If you change specs, run /xglyph refresh and check the slots.
  • Fire Blast’s glyph is conditional. It is not a flat 50% bonus; it needs a stun or knockout.
  • Envenom’s glyph is a real quality-of-life upgrade. It preserves Deadly Poison, but you still spend combo points.
  • Death Strike’s glyph scales with runic power. Do not expect the full 25% at low RP.
  • Warrior shout glyphs are radius, not duration. They are strongest in large groups and with Booming Voice.
  • Outland recipes need reputation, not just skill. Plan your faction rep before 325.
  • The Outland recipes are not on the trainer. If a glyph is missing, check the quartermaster, not the trainer.
  • Bots receive glyph passives at 60 through their class passive system. Some glyphs are not assigned to bots with incompatible kits.
  • Replacing a glyph loses the old one. Apply deliberately.

Admin note

Live glyph slot config: Glyph.Unlock.Major1Level=10, Glyph.Unlock.Minor1Level=10, Glyph.Unlock.Minor2Level=20, Glyph.Unlock.Major2Level=30, Glyph.Unlock.Major3Level=40, Glyph.Unlock.Minor3Level=60, Glyph.Unlock.RemoveDisabledGlyphAuras=1, and Glyph.ExtraSlots.RequiredItemQuality=0. The extra slots are hard-coded at EXTRA_GLYPH_REQUIRED_LEVEL=70 in mod_glyph_unlocks.cpp and use the XGLYPH addon prefix; they are stored per active spec and are one major plus one minor. Base trainer rows are lists 119, 120, and 121 across 19 NPCs, with 1,044 final trainer rows. Outland glyphs own IDs 985000–985535, GlyphProperties 1500–1527, and recipe items 985400–985427; do not reuse those ranges. Do not change RemoveDisabledGlyphAuras without considering equipped glyphs in slots that would become disabled — the module removes their auras and clears the slot. NPCBot glyph passives are assigned at level 60 through the bot class passive system; not every custom glyph is applicable to every bot kit.
