Oaths

Nine optional challenge campaigns that make the journey harder in specific ways and pay permanent combat bonuses, titles, and stack rewards.

Status: LIVE — Oaths are enabled. Disabled: account-wide reward sharing; every character earns its own Oaths.

At a glance

  • Nine challenges: Unfallen, Self-Made, Adversity, Wanderer, Underdog, Dungeoneer, Privation, The Hunted, and Slow and Steady.
  • Three brackets: Azeroth 1–60, Outland 60–70, and Northrend 70–80.
  • Enrollment levels: 1, 60, and 70 only. You can enroll at any point during that level, even after questing or gaining XP.
  • Any active Oath blocks the level-60 boost and blocks using that character as an altbot.
  • NPCBots are prohibited by Unfallen, Adversity, and Underdog at every level; Dungeoneer prohibits them from level 17. Other Oaths allow normal NPCBots.
  • Rewards are per character. Account-wide sharing is off.
  • Titles: three campaign titles plus a mastery title for completing the same Oath in all three brackets.
  • Stack rewards: completing 2, 4, 6, or 8 Oaths together grants a campaign stack bonus; completing the same set across all three brackets grants additional full-run bonuses.
  • The Oaths page is authoritative. The native buff tooltip can be imprecise; /oaths shows exact totals.

How to use

  1. Open /oaths or /challenges at any level. You can also talk to an adventure guide and open the Embark on your Journey window.
  2. Read the details for each Oath. The page shows active, eligible, failed, forfeited, completed, and next-campaign states.
  3. Select the Oaths you want for the current bracket. You may combine several.
  4. Press Start challenges when ready. Ordinary gameplay can also start the bracket automatically.
  5. Play the campaign. Restrictions apply immediately. Active Oaths show a cosmetic buff.
  6. At level 60 or 70, choose the next bracket’s Oaths before you level past that bracket. Active restrictions persist while you choose.
  7. At level 80, completed campaigns close. Titles, achievements, and permanent bonuses remain.
  8. To abandon a campaign, use the page to disable the Oath. Disabling is a forfeit, not a pause. You can reselect a forfeited Oath only while still at that campaign’s starting level.
  9. Failed Oaths are locked for the current campaign. Other Oaths continue independently.

You cannot enroll at level 2–59, 61–69, or 71–79. If you miss level 1, your next chance is 60.

Oath details that matter

  • Unfallen: a single real death ends the campaign. A hunter defeat is still a death. Dismiss NPCBots and altbots before activating; unbinding a bot is not dismissal.
  • Self-Made: you may still buy from vendors, loot corpses, complete quests, and craft. You may not use the Auction House, trade with players, receive mail items or gold, or withdraw from a guild bank.
  • Adversity: damage taken is tripled, not doubled. Pets inherit the penalties, so pet classes should plan around fragile pets.
  • Wanderer: you can use boats, zeppelins, flight paths, and transportation required by a quest or encounter. You cannot use a mount, glider, travel form, aquatic form, flight form, or Ghost Wolf.
  • Underdog: bank illegal gear before activating. The system keeps prohibited items in your inventory rather than deleting them.
  • Dungeoneer: outdoor XP and other non-dungeon XP sources are blocked from level 17. Quest XP requires verified solo dungeon provenance for every kill and item objective. A quest can be turned in outside the dungeon if its objectives were earned solo. At level 17, hired NPCBots are released and their gear is mailed back; altbots are dismissed.
  • Privation: your stored wallet is returned when you disable the Oath. Reserve payouts do not count as new earnings. If your wallet is full, spend gold and use Claim reserve for the rest. Mail is fully blocked.
  • The Hunted: hunters scale with your level, warn before attacking, and appear every 8–15 minutes. You get three defeats before the campaign fails. Only The Hunted fails; your other Oaths continue.
  • Slow and Steady: your saved personal XP rate is preserved but forced to 1x while active. It resumes when the Oath ends. The final XP award is 33% after normal bonuses, heirlooms, and rested XP. The campaign’s final award is also reduced to 33%.

Stack rewards

Only Oaths that remain eligible and complete together count. If you select eight and fail two, the remaining six can still earn the six-Oath tier.

Within one campaign

Only the highest completed tier applies. A six-Oath clear does not also grant the two- and four-Oath bonuses.

Completed togetherStack nameCampaign bonus
2Twofold Trial+1% reputation
4Fourfold Crucible+1% speed
6Sixfold Burden+1% attributes
8The Impossible Road+1% maximum health and +1% damage/healing

Across all three brackets

These full 1–80 bonuses require the same Oaths to complete all three brackets on one character. They are cumulative:

Same Oaths completed in all three bracketsFull-run bonus
2+1% attributes
4+1% damage/healing
6+1% less NPC damage taken
8+1% attributes, +1% maximum health, +1% damage/healing

Mastery and full-run stack rewards must be earned by one character. Clears spread across different alts do not combine.

Titles

Each Oath has a title for each bracket and a mastery title for completing all three.

Tips

  • Choose at level 1 before you ding 2. If you miss the level-1 window, you cannot enroll until 60.
  • At 60 and 70, choose before you level. The next bracket’s Oaths must be selected while you are still at the bracket boundary.
  • Do not take an Oath on a character you want to boost or use as an altbot. Any active Oath blocks both.
  • Dismiss NPCBots before Unfallen, Adversity, or Underdog. Unbinding is not enough; fully dismiss them.
  • Bank your gear before Underdog. Uncommon and better items cannot be equipped, and the system keeps them in your bags.
  • Plan travel for Wanderer. No mount, glider, or travel form. Boats, zeppelins, taxis, and required transports still work.
  • Do not enable Adversity casually. Triple damage taken and half healing is a real difficulty mode.
  • For Dungeoneer, bring a class pet, not a player. Other players and NPCBots invalidate dungeon credit. Quest objectives need solo provenance.
  • For Privation, do not rely on mail. Mail is blocked. Stored gold returns when you disable the Oath.
  • For The Hunted, keep moving and keep cooldowns for hunters. They scale with you and arrive every 8–15 minutes, up to three defeats.
  • Slow and Steady is still a normal 1x leveling experience. The final XP is 33%, but the challenge is about the journey, not a broken rate.
  • A failed Oath does not end the run. The failed Oath is locked for that campaign; the rest continue and can still form a smaller stack.
  • Check /oaths for exact totals. The buff tooltip may show a generic value.
  • Account-wide rewards are off. Do not expect an alt to inherit a title or bonus.

Admin note

Live config: LevelingChallenges.Enable=1, LevelingChallenges.AccountWideRewards=0, LevelingChallenges.HunterMinSeconds=480, LevelingChallenges.HunterMaxSeconds=900, LevelingChallenges.HunterMaxDefeats=3. The C++ manager owns eligibility, failures, forfeits, hunter state, XP normalization, Privation reserves, and the persisted reward ledger; the Lua zone_selector_ui.lua only presents state and sends revision-checked requests. Do not grant rewards by editing the ledger or by applying the descriptive spell rows directly. AccountWideRewards=1 would share completions, titles, achievements, and permanent bonuses across the account; that is not the live setting. Active Oaths block boosting and altbot recruitment; Unfallen, Adversity, and Underdog always prohibit NPCBots, while Dungeoneer does so from level 17. If Oaths are disabled for new activations, existing restrictions, reserves, and earned rewards must continue to work.
